Through the ’90s, they formed a super successful director-actor pair, with hits such as Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995) and Hero No. 1 (1997). Till date, Govinda and David Dhawan have worked together in as many as 16 films. That is why it’s surprising to know that the two haven’t been in touch for over three years now.
“Ek zamaana ho gaya David se mile hue (it has been ages since I met David). We haven’t even spoken to each other for three-four years now. But that’s how it is — when you work with someone, you’re more in touch with them at that time,” says the actor, with a laugh.

When contacted, Dhawan, too, concedes that he hasn’t met his old friend for a “really long time”. Ask the film-maker if there is any “issue” between them and he says, “Nothing like that. It’s just that we both have been busy with our work. While I was working on Main Tera Hero (MTH), he was shooting for his own films.”

Like Govinda, David also feels that “not too much should be read” into this. “When you work with a certain set of actors and technicians, you end up being in touch with them more. Everything is fine between us,” he says. The last time Govinda and Dhawan worked together was in 2009 for Do Knot Disturb.
In the meantime, while the director is planning his next film after the success of MTH, Govinda is set to revive his home banner after a gap of nearly seven years with an upcoming movie. Besides, he will also be seen in Shaad Ali and Anurag Basu’s respective films.
