Actor Neetu Chandra recently lent more than just a helping hand when her maid’s daughter, Seema, was getting married. “I told my maid that since I don’t have a sister, I’d like to help Seema like one. I gifted her whatever she’d require to begin a married life. I felt nice doing it,” says Neetu, who gifted money and home appliances to the girl. Neetu isn’t, of course, the only charitable person in Bollywood. Top actors have been known to help out their staff on personal and professional levels.
A flat as a wedding gift
A few years ago, Shah Rukh Khan famously bought a flat in Bandra as a wedding gift for his bodyguard, Yaseen, where he could live with his family. The latter had been staying with the actor at his home, Mannat, until then.
Amitabh Bachchan’s make-up man, Deepak Sawant, has worked with him for over 35 years now. So when Sawant produced a Bhojpuri film called Gangadevi (2012), his employer made a guest appearance in it. Jaya Bachchan, too, was seen in the movie; and neither of them charged for it. Salman Khan also roped in Shera for an appearance in a song in his film Bodyguard (2011). Again, when Katrina Kaif’s hairstylist Promila Hunter produced an animated film, Main Krishna Hoon (2013), she did a cameo in it, and even took time out to promote the film, without charging for it. Hrithik Roshan also acted the film directed by Rajiv S. Ruia.
Last year, Kareena Kapoor bought gizmos like iPhones and iPads for her make-up man Ritesh Naik and hairstylist Pompy Hans.
