He’s tired of action, he wants to do romantic comedies now. There’s also his dad’s mytho-historical with Hrithik Roshan and he’s also writing scripts. Meet the now-improved Zayed Khan.
Your father Sanjay Khan is getting back into production and has reportedly singed Hrithik Roshan to play the lead in his film.
That’s completely untrue. We often discuss films, get excited by an idea and get someone to write a screenplay around it, in the hope that something interesting will come of it. Maybe the people whom we hired have been spreading these rumours. There’s no film yet but dad will be back in a year or so.
His last project was the epic, The Sword of Tipu Sultan, on TV. Is he geared to the changes in cinema?
Initially it was difficult to get him to see new films but we managed. And one day he suddenly said that we should make a romantic comedy. I’m glad he was thinking out of the box. But he’s also stuck on this one major project and won’t rest till he realises his dream.
And that is?
The Legend of Ram — Prince of India. He’s hell bent on making a desi Gladiatior meets Lord of the Rings. He has a doctorate in Hinduism and knows the subject well. It will have Hrithik and me playing Ram and Lakshman in this lavishly mounted mytho-historical.
There was also talk of him directing the Qurbani remake?
I don’t think dad would, but the possibility of a Qurbani remake is always there. It’s up to Fardeen. We’ve discussed it but a remake is tricky business.
You ventured into writing with Rocky but went off-track.
Rocky was a premature thought. Unfortunately, not everything you write gets executed well. But I still want to write. I might also produce, direct or maybe even own a multiplex chain tomorrow. Till then, I’ll do romantic comedies. I’ve done enough action and need a break from it. It’s not a good idea to wake up in the morning to maar dhad.
But Blue is an action film and Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar and you were reportedly in a battle of one-upmanship while shooting for the film.
People will talk. I never got the impression that Akshay wanted to cut me out, though when your co-star is 15 years younger, it doesn’t mean that you do less. Sanju sir is like a brother with whom I’ve done four films. Without being arrogant, I don’t feel any less to either of them.
You only have one Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene in your kitty. Why are you so choosy?
I’m an emotional guy who’s always there for friends. I’ve never blamed anyone for my decisions but I’ve grown up now. Apart from Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene, I’m working on two scripts. I’m hoping to start a film in January.
