The wettest day in Mumbai’s history? June 10, 1991

Sep 20, 2017 05:40 PM IST

IMD’s data from Santa Cruz station in Mumbai and Safdarjung station in Delhi shows that there is a vast difference between what Delhiites face and what Mumbaikars endure during monsoons.

Delhi: Delhiites don’t get Mumbai rains, they literally don’t get it. On the wettest day in its recorded history, Mumbai received 399 mm of rain in 24 hours on June 10, 1991. For comparison, that is more than the average rain Delhi receives in the entire month of June.

That is almost 40 cm of rain in one day, over 1.3 feet of rain. Delhi’ s wettest day came decades ago in 1958 on July 21, when 266.2mm of rain was dumped on the capital by monsoon clouds.

The data from the Indian Meteorological Department takes into account readings from the Safdarjung station in Delhi and Santa Cruz in Mumbai. All time record refers to atleast 100 years of record keeping by IMD for that particular station. For Mumbai Santa Cruz is the only station for which historical data is available.

In India the monsoon season lasts between June and September, and this year despite predictions of a normal monsoon from the IMD, the rainfall is likely to be around 6 % below the long period average (LPA). At the same time sudden outbursts are causing more damage, putting pressure on already crumbling infrastructure.

Between 8:30 am on Sept 19 and 8:30 am on Sept 20, the city received 303.7mm of rain. The wettest September for Mumbai happened in 1954 with 920 mm of rainfall. Till now Mumbai has received 536.4mm rain in September.
