If there’s a fashion week, some trends do emerge. But be warned, not all of them are right for you! Here are some trends you can safely adapt:
Do invest in a few well cut jackets. JJ did a beautiful short series, Meera and Muzzafar had some nice quilted ones. Wear them over anything: a salwar suit or sari, or even pants.
Do wear a halter neck if you have great collarbones. A long white dress with a halter neck and cinched waist can look stunning on a slim frame. Shantanu and Nikhil did a lovely white number.
Liked the idea of lehengas over fitted pyjamas. Very sexy. Try it out. And under saris too. Makes the sari more of an adventure.
Do play with colour. After all that’s one of our strengths as Indians that we can carry off an amazing colour palette. Meera Muzaffar did a lovely shocking fuscia with royal blue, and there were some fabulously rich yellows, courtesy Manav Gangwani. nWear interesting necklines. Anju Modi had muted, traditional silhouettes but her necklines were fabulous.
And now for the no nos: Please avoid the following under pain of being labelled a fashion victim!
Feathers. Not unless you are a bird, or planning to take a glide from the 125th floor. Not unless you are at Moulin Rouge and want to join the gals out there, which you may if you can kick your legs high enough. Not unless… forget it, never! Leave it for the damsels on the ramp.
See through lehengas ! Please! Even on ramp they look, well, lewd. And in case they do become a trend, please don’t become a follower. Lehengas are sensuous and sexy, showing your legs through them is not!
Buy a jacket just because it looks good. Everyone will make them, including the local darzi, now that they have blazed the ramp. Ensure yours fits well
If you must show your midriff, ensure it is not overly muscled and not an imitation of the scooter or car tyre either. If your looks like either of these extremes, cover, cover, cover.
And last but not the least: that power shoulder look. It went out with the boardroom battles. What are you out to prove ? That you are the boss? Remember she who stoops to conquer, wins!
