Feast your eyes on a smorgasbord of Bollywood glamour this January, as leading glossies feature film actors in their various avatars on the cover. The New Year pick for magazine covers seems to be fresh, young faces.
It’s a sassy Kangna Ranaut in a fuchsia shirt-dress on the cover of Marie Claire while Bollywood’s leggy import from America — Nargis Fakhri — plays a sea nymph for the Harper’s Bazaar January cover, shot in Maldives. FHM has gone for a sultry Chitrangda Singh, flaunting voluminous hair and a skimpy sheer dress. And, Maxim’s pick for the New Year cover is the sensuous Sonam Kapoor.
The only exception to the rule seems to be former super model Mehr Rampal, who graces the cover of Vogue, and quite befits the issue that talks about shape. The New Year cover girls are also getting a thumbs up from designers and stylists. "We are bored of looking at the same faces on the covers. I think Mehr is a very intelligent choice as a cover girl for Vogue for the New Year. She is someone who’s been effortlessly beautiful in various decades of her life," says fashion designer Rina Dhaka. About Fakhri, she says, "Fakhri’s face has an innocent and youthful charm and she can look good with minimal makeup."
Fashion stylist Aakanksha Jain gives her vote to Kangna Ranaut for her versatility. "She has an innate ability to carry any look with aplomb. Since she’s so stylish and well-versed with fashion herself, it becomes easy to capture her in any look. She’s the perfect cover girl," says Jain.
And Chitrangda receives applause for her exotic and classy looks. "Seeing her in a super sexy avatar for FHM magazine was a refreshing change. Clear skin and perfect bone structure make her extremely photogenic," says fashion photographer Rahul Dutta.
"For our first issue of the year, we were looking for a combination of a fresh and vibrant face. Nargis (32) exudes vibrancy and freshness," says Nupur Mehtapuri, creative director, Harper’s Bazaar.
The 42-year-old producer may seem like an unusual choice, but for the glossy, she’s "perfect". "Our January issue is devoted to shape and we wanted to tell our readers this New Year that shape is not necessarily about the body. It’s also about how we look after and shape our minds. Mehr, who’s never adhered to size zero, and has always been fit and athletic, does justice on both counts," says Priya Tanna, editor, Vogue.
The 24-year-old last made waves with Tanu Weds Manu. In 2012, she will be seen in Krrish 2 and Dedh Ishqiya. "We wanted a young and fresh face for the cover, so we chose Kangna. The first edition of the year brings in a hope element with it. The actor befits the role since she herself is not from the industry and made a mark of her own quite successfully," says Neena Haridas, editor, Marie Claire.
The 35-year-old actor takes on a bold new avatar as the item girl in a song in Shirish Kunder’s 2012 film Joker. "She is close to being the ultimate Indian pin-up girl. She stands for easy and effortless glamour. There is a lot of diversity in her personality. Chitrangda on our cover is the best New Year gift we could have thought of, for men," says Kabeer Sharma, editor, FHM about why they chose her as their cover girl.
