Ballerinas, white sneakers, and taps: the shoes make the wardrobe for the dancer.
Dancer Shakti Mohan (26) is getting dressed when we reach her Andheri residence. We are welcomed by her sister, singer Neeti Mohan, and also kept company by their pet canine, Frodo. In less than 15 minutes, Shakti appears in a summer dress, and parks herself on the couch. She points to her white shoes — her current obsession. Her other obsessions include bargaining at Colaba Causeway, and shopping at the airport.
Wardrobe staples: “I will never run out of cycling shorts, ballet slippers, denim shorts, socks and pyjamas.”
Priceless possession: “My dance shoes — ballroom shoes, tap shoes, ballerinas - are my life. I can kill people for them.”
Style no-no: “I hate leopard prints. Mukti (Mohan, sister) bought a leopard-print dress. I couldn’t stand it. Yes, I have worn them during my performances, but I never sport them otherwise.”
On impulse: “I am at my impulsive best every time I am at airports. I end up buying a lot of stuff, and pamper myself from the duty-free stores.”
Brand conscious: “In the city, I end up shopping a lot of my casuals from H&M, Forever 21 and Zara. I am not into designer wear, but have worn outfits by Swapnil Shinde.”
Now trending: “I have rediscovered my love for white sneakers recently. I have been wearing them to every occasion, and pairing them with every outfit I own — be it casuals, formals or dresses.”
Old is gold: “My pair of Capezio dance shoes is around five or six years old. They are tattered but I simply cannot let go of them. I had bought them from a Capezio store in New York, USA.”
Fashion tip: “Always wear what makes you comfortable. And when you are out shopping, make sure your bargaining skills are on point. I have bargained my way into great deals at Colaba Causeway, Fashion Street and Linking Road.”
