Bling has found many takers on the fashion front, all over again. The shimmer and shine of sequined dresses have conquered the wardrobes of the fashion conscious Bollywood and Hollywood actors. One of the preferred red carpet garments recently, the sequined dress in flattering silhouettes was adorned by Bollywood actors Shilpa Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, Miss India World 2011 Kanishtha Dhankhar, anchor and actor Maria Goretti Warsi and Minissha Lamba. Internationally, donning the glamorous dress were Kate Middleton at the 10th annual Absolute Return for Kids (ARK) gala dinner in London, Beyonce Knowles at her Glastonbury show and Hillary Swank at IIFA. Terming it as a classic outfit, Varun Bahl says, “A sequined sheathing dress is one of the most elegant things one can wear.”
A classy affair
A sequined dress looks graceful yet understated in pastel and nude hues, while darker shades such as black and metallic colours such as silver, gold and bronze are ultra glam and tricky to carry. “Bling and sequined dresses have always been there in fashion. A sequined gown or dress looks chic in neutral hues such as champagne, ivory or black,” says fashion designer Gaurav Gupta. To carry a sequined number with aplomb, it’s imperative to be confident about your dress, its fit and not be to conscious of the bling. Bahl says, “It all depends upon the garment you choose. Its imperative to first know whether you like a sequined sheathing dress or not and if it suits you; then focus on the look you will like to pull-off.”
Keep it minimal
It’s very easy to go wrong or look OTT in a sequined silhouette. Thus, follow the basic rule of toning down the rest of your look. However, Gupta says that it depends upon each individual, whether you can carry-off the OTT look and still look hot. “But its best to keep your look simple and minimal. Avoid contrast colour accessories and choose your footwear with utmost care to not go overboard,” he adds.
Get the Look
Accessory play: To compliment your sequined sheathed dress, accessorise minimally. Keep it elegant and never overdo your look with sequined pumps and a sequined clutch, at the same time. You can keep the neck bare, or if the dress has a low neckline, dress it with a chunky or delicate neckpiece, keeping in mind the look and if you can carry it off with grace. Also, select your footwear carefully, assuring it is in not a contrasting hue to your dress.
Mission make up: To maintain the minimal style, underplay the makeup too. Tone it down to light or neutral shades, if you prefer an understated look. Or experiment with lip colour in a brighter shade and with neatly styled hair that are pulled back.
