Angelina Jolie’s ring is a rage

It’s quite bold and costs a bomb, but city jewellers say Jolie’s engagement ring is the next big jewellery trend.

All it took was one glimpse to make actor Angelina Jolie’s engagement ring — given to her by actor Brad Pitt — a rage worldwide. The ring is estimated to be worth $250,000 (Rs 1.3 crore approx), and apparently it took Pitt a year to perfect the design along with jeweller Robert Procop.

The simple yet intricate design of the ring has an emerald cut diamond in the center with baguette diamonds cut in steps, set within the band. It is crafted with the finest quality diamonds cut into an exact custom size and shape to suit Jolie’s hand. The ring was first spotted on the 36-year-old actor’s wedding finger at the Chinese Art collection at the LA County Museum, earlier this month, where she was pictured with Pitt, 48, and their son Pax, eight. While the ring’s replicas are selling like hot cakes internationally, closer home, the demand for the 16-carat emerald cut diamond ring has also increased. Indian jewellery designers and jewellers say the ring will set a new trend for engagement rings in the Capital. Designer Radhika Chanana of Ice Accessories says, “Angelina’s engagement ring is not a very feminine design but it suits her strong personality. The ring will become a big trend this wedding season.” Jeweller Varda Goenka of Diagold says, “Emerald cut diamonds are as such very popular in India. Now, people have asked for similar design for their engagement rings.”

However, Rahul Gupta of PP Jewellers feels it’s a very ordinary design. “The ring looks like a 9-10 carat diamond ring as opposed to the 16-carat diamond ring, but the popularity of rectangular diamond (emerald cut diamond) will now help us sell double the number to what we generally sell,” he adds.

On sale already, internationally

Two international brands are already selling the ring’s replica overseas. Jewellery brand Gemvara is selling a similar ring set in sterling silver for an affordable price of $1200 (Rs.6.2,490 approx). Their website is selling it posing it as ‘reminiscent of Angelina Jolie engagement ring’. Another brand, Jacob & Co, is selling a similar looking emerald cut diamond white gold ring at a price of $300,000 (Rs.1.5 crore approx).
