This Earth Day, how about giving your synthetic and plastic handbags a ditch for eco-friendly options? We bring to you bags made of recyclable materials, such as jute, hemp, bamboo fibre, organic silk and brocade, cotton, grass and the like.

When we think of eco-friendly bags, the only thing that comes to our mind are plain jute bags. But they have been revamped with embellishments, such as lace, semi-precious stones, sequin work, velvet appliqué, pearls and zari borders. “Jute bags are a rage this season. They come in all shapes and sizes and are affordable too,” says Ashok Dalal, managing director, Brandhouse Oviesse. “Jute bags with pretty printing and Indian embroidery makes for an interesting accessory,” says accessory designer Radhika Gupta.

Accessory designers and shopkeepers believe that there’s a definite decline in plastic and synthetic bags. “People these days are environmentally-conscious. Moreover, the organic bags made of bamboo fibre, cotton and jute are reasonably priced, which starts at Rs400” says Rishab Mathur, a bag store owner in Karol Bagh. Bags made of pure cotton and canvas are also doing very well in the market.

“Organic bags are easy to clean. You can clean them either with your hands or get a gentle machine wash, depending on the work,” says accessory designer Kanika Chawla.
