American luxury accessory brand, Judith Leiber, has invited fashion designer Suneet Varma to design a range of accessories.
He is the first Indian designer to be chosen by the brand to design for its stores worldwide. “When I was invited to discuss the project, I was expecting a one-year contract. To my surprise I was offered a three-year project,” Varma says excitedly.
“There are intricacies involved in the making of Leiber bags like making moulds in Italy, checking various parameters involved in making a bag and so on. Things will get moving a year before the product hits the stand. I am starting with a few bags for ’09 and will do a complete range for 2010 and 2011,” he adds.
On his part, while trying to “celebrate” India through his themes while designing for Leiber, Varma does not plan to restrict himself.
“This is a brand well-known around the world and I want it to have a global appeal. Of course, an Indian influence will always be there but at the same time I propose to give myself a wider canvas to work on. My first collection will be inspired by palaces — it could be a palace in Jaipur or it could be the Chateau de Versaille.”
While he starts with a range of handbags for Leiber, Varma says he will then move on to other accessories like jewellery.
According to Judith Leiber President Mary Gleason, the association is part of the brand’s global expansion. “We are happy to have Suneet on board since he brings a wealth of experience and a global mind space to the brand,” says Mary.
“His strength as one of India’s foremost couture designers will only add to the brand’s repertoire as a red carpet ‘must-have’. Suneet will work closely with our design team on creating an exclusive collection which will appeal to our international clientele,” she adds.
The chosen one for Moet & Chandon’s Brand Champion, a trend forecast expert for Swarovski, BMW’s brand ambassador and now designing for Leiber. Suneet Varma is all set to take on the world.
