We’re well into summer and you’d expect the shortest of short crops on famous heads, but the big boys in Bollywood are going for, well, beards!
Actors John Abraham, Ranveer Singh, Saif Ali Khan, Emraan Hashmi, Randeep Hooda, Aditya Roy Kapoor and Anil Kapoor are among those who’ve picked the good ol’& beard this season, bringing back the old-fashioned, raw appeal. And even Rahul Gandhi, the new-age style icon in Indian politics, has been sporting the bearded look for a while now.
“It’s high time men went back to being men. The metrosexual, all-clean, groomed look is passé. Saif pulls off the beard the best as he personifies class, power and poise. This whole beard and moustache look also works well with Ranveer Singh’s features, and Aditya Roy Kapoor looked very attractive in the bearded look in Aashiqui 2,” says designer Nikhil Thampi.
Bollywood stylist Rick Roy, who has given Emraan Hashmi the back-to-basics look in his upcoming film Ghanchakkar, says: “Scruffy is very stylish. It gives shape to the face. It portrays a carefree attitude. Canvas jackets, worn-off leather jackets and denims go really well with this look.” However, beauty expert Ambika Pillai points out that it’s hard to carry this look with formals. “If you want to portray a macho attitude, it works. Scruffy looks nice but only with regular clothes. For a formal event, this isn’t very suitable,” she says.
While the style appears no maintenence, it does require some amount of grooming. “I think simplicity or effortless is the key word for new-age men. But, I think more time is spent on effortless looks than a made-up look, even if it stands out and looks great. It requires regular trims, may be every two to three weeks. Styling with products every day does take some time too, but it definitely helps and is very much worth it,” says make-up expert Sonic Sarwate.
