The actor prefers collecting perfumes over clothing items. His favourite look? Shirtless, with pyjamas on.
We walk into Upen Patel’s plush Bandra home on a sunny afternoon. He is wearing a white T-shirt and pyjamas, and tells us that he is clueless about how to talk wardrobe. The actor likes his clothes to be of a good quality: that’s just about his only criteria. “I’m not attached to my clothes or accessories. I’ve been lucky to have worked with some of the best designers. And thankfully, I know what is right or wrong for me when it comes to styling myself,” he says.
Style sensibility: “Style is a personal thing and has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is transient.”
Watch it:“I got a custom-made 18k gold watch, which weighs 200g and has my name engraved on it. From the dial to the numbering, everything is made of pure gold. The watch reminds me of how far I have come in life and how much more I have to achieve.”
At home: “You will always find me roaming in my pyjamas if you come without informing me. I am shirtless and comfortable in my own skin, literally.”
Fragrance fetish: “I own a massive collection of fragrances that I have picked up from various places. It is important for a man to smell good and have his signature aroma. This is why I specially shop for oud fragrances, as they are more exclusive. Also, oud lasts longer than regular perfumes.”
Favourite shopping destination: “I love to shop in London. It is the fashion capital of the world and I love the European styling for men. Right from great tailoring to high-end premium brands and high street fashion stores, the city has something for everyone.”
Style no-no: “I hate boot-cut jeans.”
Colour talk: “White is an absolute favourite. My wardrobe is dominated with white clothes. I believe in what it represents — purity, innocence, wholeness and new beginnings. White might seem bland to some but it is like a blank canvas waiting to be painted on.”
Style icon: “Big B (actor Amitabh Bachchan) is so suave. He is the only one who looks perfect when he wears suits. It is important to know what looks good on you. Mr Bachchan knows it well.”
