Ever since US first lady Michelle Obama wore a necklace designed by her at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s dinner in Delhi, jewellery designer Ranjana Khan has been on cloud nine. “I was blown away. It is undoubtedly my proudest moment yet,” says Khan, who was born into a Gujarati family in Mumbai and now lives in New York. “It’s a big necklace; Mrs Obama loves statement necklaces and wears them so well. Her innate beauty and grace makes the necklace come alive,” Khan says about the necklace, which will soon be available through her website for $950.
Khan says that she was as surprised as anyone else when Mrs O, who has worn her designs on other occasions, too, chose to flaunt the neckpiece. “No one knows what she is going to wear until she wears it. I have not interacted with her personally, but she has such a distinct sense of style that it’s easy to understand,” she says.
