It was in the 19th century that jeans burst onto the scene as a uniform for miners owing to the fabric’s ability to handle wear and tear. Cut to the present day, and they are an intrinsic closet staple. Stylist Kamlesh Mistry says, “Denims are a wardrobe must-have because of their classic appeal and versatility — they can take you from work to play effortlessly.” With the rains over, the hottest days of the year behind us, and with Mumbai hoping for a pleasant winter (let’s not kid ourselves; it won’t really get cold), it’s reason enough to invest in some denims. Here are the washes and styles you should check out.
This popular style requires you to choose a rip based on your personality. There is enough scope to go from subtle to over-the-top. Mala Hemnani of Denim Story advises against distress on your thigh or backside if you are heavy on the hips. Rajesh Narkar, co-founder and CPO of Freecultr, suggests that you team them with basic T-shirts or tank tops to keep the focus on the jeans.
Ideal body type: Heavy top, narrow hips and thin, shapely legs fit the bill.
Hemnani feels they act as a tummy tuck and take away from a muffin top. "Team them with a chiffon blouse and heels to match," advises Narkar.
Ideal body type: Apple-shaped figure or those with a lean body and slender legs.
They provide a welcome reprieve from basic blues and blacks. Bright neons, cobalt blue and burgundy are the colours to place your bets on this season. Mistry warns, “Light colours work only on those who are on the slimmer side. For those with hourglass figures, try indigo washes.”
Ideal body type: Works for most body types.
Acid wash jeans
Keeping it simple is the key, according to Hemnani. “Acid wash jeans are bold. Pair them with a simple, white tee for maximum effect.” Coloured footwear can be used to add a dose of pop to the look. Throw on a blazer and statement necklace to wear it by night.
Ideal body type: Avoid them if you are curvy, short, or bottom-heavy as they will accentuate the hips.
This snug must-have is a winner owing to the slimming effect it lends to the wearer. “Choose jeggings made from super stretch denims or cotton stretch fabrics as they promise comfort,” says Narkar. Hemnani adds that you should avoid wearing jeggings with short tops unless the pants have back pockets.
Ideal body type: Works like a charm on everyone.
Muted prints with solid dyed colours or a floral print accentuated with a white lace top are particularly trendy this season,” Narkar reveals. Hemnani stresses on the importance of length here. “Don’t keep it too short. Just a few inches above the ankle is perfect as it elongates the legs.”
Ideal body type: Lean and athletic frame. Those who are bottom-heavy can go for smaller prints.
