This is the best kind of thrift store, one that offers you Louis Vuitton bags and Fendi belts for less than half the price. Started by Fatema Lokhandwala, Branded Bargains at the Oberoi Towers, Nariman Point, allows the swish set to dispose of their five-figure accessories and even get some cash back for their generosity. Then, those with modest budgets can snap up the pricey goods for a steal.
Sharing space inside the same galleria that houses the flagship stores of these top brands, Lokhandwala claims her location actually works best for buyers and sellers. “The people who walk into these big stores are the same ones who offload their old bags at my shop,” she says.
Customers who want to clear space in their wardrobe for newer purchases can bring in their designer bags, belts and wallets, and quote a sale price, keeping in mind its depreciated value and potential demand. Lokhandwala then offers them a 90-day consignment deal, after which they can take back unsold products. She claims to be the best authentication system for these second-hand accessories, saying, “I’m equipped with enough knowledge to authenticate the products on my own. If there’s the faintest doubt, I won’t house it.”
Predictably, Louis Vuitton creates the highest demand among both men and women. The most expensive item sold so far is a bag from the fashion house, which originally cost R75,000, but was traded for R38,000. Fendi, Bottega Veneta, Chanel and Gucci round up the top five.
