Denims and snug-fit leggings are a girl’s worst enemies whenever the rising temperature takes a toll. The same goes with body-hugging sheaths and heavy-set fabrics that also act as a big dampener, with easy-breezy anti-fits coming to the rescue. In such a scenario, the mighty shirt dress could be your BFF. No surprise then that Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities alike are buttoning up, stretching their collars and easing into their favourite version. Here’s some inspiration to take on the remnants of summer and fight the monsoon blues with styling your shirt dress the right way.

Red carpet, two ways

You might not take a shirt dress to be a thing for formal dos, but these celebrities prove otherwise. Of course, Rihanna can rock anything from a bralet to a toga, but even for her, the shirt dress could be a tricky number to pull off. At an award function, the singer wore a Thierry Mugler version (From his 1988 collection!), and the jacket-inspired silhouette fit Riri like a dream. On the other end of the style spectrum, actor Kajal Aggarwal wore a Shahin Mannan denim shirt dress with a kitschy scooter print. Which one would you choose? Add a statement lip or even a luxe manicure, and you’ll be red-carpet ready.

But, where’s the collar?

Here’s another way to give that on-the-go, anti-fit a spin. We love how Prachi Desai made casual look cool with her version of a shirt dress, sans collar, inspired by oversized sweaters. If you are heading out for a brunch with your bae, put those aviators on and ditch done-to-death babydoll dresses for a similar style. The pop of colour via the multi-hued flats makes the look stand out, so keep your add-ons and accessories on top of your shopping list!

Dressing em’ up

When model Miranda Kerr wore this ‘50s-inspired dress for a recent promotional event, we lost our heart to her powder blue milkmaid-chic number. We’ll call it shirt-inspired thanks to the full skirt. This one emanates full-fledged inspiration for those who love a vintage wardrobe and like to play it comfortable stylish. Back home, Neha Dhupia also makes a case for the shirt dress. While we think it could have been styled better, we can’t blame the lady for travelling comfy! Get inspired, ditch the denims and choose a billowy, oversized button down when you are up for a long plane ride. You can thank us later!
