Call it countryside chic or a throwback to the era of Woodstock — it’s hard to escape having a tryst with tassels or a fun fling with fringes. The shredded-look is not only for sweltering summer, as your winter wardrobe can also be perked up for the season.

Take inspiration from pop icons and put 2015 into tassel mode. From cropped jackets adorned with tumbling tassels to picking up fringe-adorned boots and oversized jackets — there are so many ways to usher in different eras in your wardrobe. So, whether it is Jimi Hendrix who you look up to or runways of the 2000s, choose your fringe style.

Jailhouse rock
In the ’50s, Elvis Presley was the reigning king of rock and roll, also known for a slick pompadour and bejewelled jumpsuits. Fringes brought in some edge to his look which made up a big part of the icon’s persona. Bring the era into your closet, with a jacket in pearly shade with exaggerated tassel detail, and get ready to rock.

Pastel heaven
Paisleys that smell of freedom and hippie-chic florals that never went out of fashion — ’60s was all about these little details and much more style inspiration. Singer Nancy Sinatra’s serenading voice in the song, Bang Bang, saw her in a new-age flapper-esque dress, in a lovely shade of powder pink and tiers of tassels. To welcome the ’60s into your wardrobe, pick up a dress adorned with rings of fringes in a summery hue and add the winter element by coupling your ensemble with knee-high boots and an olive green leather jacket.

Amid the purple haze
Music also gave way to a psychedelic mish-mash of colours, born out of the likes of musicians Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Marianne Faithfull, who incorporated fringes in their stage outfits, which moved along with the beats of the their music. As the 1970s ushered in, style became all about being yourself. If your spirit, too, reflects the colours of the era, pick embellished jackets with epaulettes adorned with moving fringes. Tassels with prints across them also define playfulness of the ’70s.

All revamped
It’s easy to dismiss ’80s as an era made of fashion which would rather not make a comeback. But, there’s always a way to get inspired without blindly replicating. Take on from the fearlessness of English band Led Zeppelin and incorporate the mighty fringe in a fun way. Pick up jackets with sleeves adorned with tassels and pair them with dark, stonewashed denims to make a statement.

Updated closet
From the onset of the ’90s until now — tassels have entered the era of accessories, too. From oversized totes to ankle-length boots, you can revamp the style element by making it a signature detail of an ensemble. Pick up a woollen cape and snug leggings and bring on the boots, adorned with tiers of tassels to top off your look.
