India’s first Couture Week drew star power this week as designers sent aspirational, fantasy ensembles down the catwalk on the backs of Bollywood beauties.
Actors and celebs braved a downpour to descend on the HDIL India Couture Week which started in Mumbai on Tuesday, lending support to designers who keep them glam all year round. Ritu Kumar flagged off the Week with her solo show that had Karan Johar, Gul Panag, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi and Moon-Moon Sen lending glitz to the front row.
The ramp had star power with Priyanka Chopra in a gorgeous lehenga, followed by Neha Dhupia and sexy sisters Riya and Raima Sen. To mark Ritu Kumar’s 40 years in the industry, yesteryear supermodels Anna Bredmeyer and Shyamolie Varma walked the ramp. Shah Rukh Khan, wife Gauri and friend Karan turned up at the post-show bash. Couture Week, on till September 21, will see 11 leading designers celebrate bespoke fashion.
Unlike the bank-breaking, impossible-to-wear creations on show twice a year in Paris that are out of reach for all except the very, very rich, Indian couturiers say they are offering wearable made-to-order clothes at a realistic price. “It’s not just for the Mr Ambanis of this world,” the president of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), Sunil Sethi, said. “It will cater to all the people who want to have a bit of Indian tradition and history. It’s aspirational, affordable, fantasy and reality. This is really going to be a celebration of fashion in the true spirit of India.”
