It’s that time of the year again when everything around you is rain kissed, fresh and cheery : a good enough reason for a girl to show off her most cheerful side. Think monsoon, think rainbows and wear colours, that’s what the make-up bible spells out this season.

Rain proof your make-up and you’re set to puddle stomp in style. Read on to learn some expert tricks that’ll make you look like a rain goddess.

Nothing’s as ‘un-diva-like’ as mascara running down your cheeks, (unless you’re vying for a bulldog inspired makeup award), blotchy blush on that looks like rashes on your cheeks, and a foundation that settles on your necks creating ugly creases. As the weather turns humid, stick to completely waterproof products.

“Go for oil-free matte primer, and an oil-free base. And choose only waterproof eye shadows in gel form, waterproof kohl and mascara, and water-resistant lipsticks that set in a jiffy and stay intact for 8-10 hours,” says makeup artist Vidya Tikari.

Keep the base natural. “Use a concealer sparingly to cover eye circles, or skin blemishes. If you need more coverage, go for mineralise powder foundation,” says Tikari. A cheek tint gives you a beautiful hint of colour that’ll hold up longer. Avoid lip-glosses and go in for long-stay lipsticks. Finish off by spraying on a ‘fixing spray’.

“Less is always more in the monsoon but don’t shy away from colours. A bright mouth (red, pink or coral) will always catch attention. You can use a neutral palette (nude or skin) for your eyes. Don’t forget to add some colour to your nails — they are the new attention seeking area,” says make up artist Jojo.

For your eyes, the colours of the season are tones of blue and purple. “Use blue coloured pencils around the lashline and apply 2-3 coats of waterproof mascara,” says Tikari. Add a pop of colour on your eyelids with rainbow hues. Fun colours such as orange, green, blue and yellow jazz up your eyes while peach, pink, and orange bring out your cheeks.

Your handy monsoon beauty guide

Before you sleep, remove all traces of makeup. Sleeping with your makeup on makes you a magnet for microbes having a field day during the monsoons. You could become more prone to allergies, and fungal infections.

Use astringent or rose water to keep your pores clean. Apply an antibacterial face masque.

For oily skin, an oatmeal scrub followed by a pack of ripe papaya pulp ensures proper exfoliation and cleansing. n Dry skin should be mildly toned with a mix of 5 drops of Chamomile oil and a teaspoon of milk.
