His list of clientele is a virtual star roster including Saif Ali Khan, Priyanka and Chopra, Zayed Khan Raveena Tandon. I caught up with the 28-year-old designer to ask ..

What prompted you to specialise in men's wear
?
I wanted to launch my men’s wear collection for some time. The Delhi Fashion Week seemed to be the ideal opportunity for me to launch MG Men.

What was your experience like at the Wills India Fashion Week in Delhi?
New buyers — both Indian and international, as well as the media, were very supportive. The Fashion Design Council of India offered a much-needed platform for established as well as new designers.

Why didn’t you participate in the Lakme India Fashion Week in Bombay?
Because it’s not the official body for hosting fashion weeks. How did you coax Akshaye Khanna to walk the ramp for you? He’s a friend of mine. Besides, I wanted someone who is taken seriously in Bollywood as well as in real life.

He’s the perfect example of the classic look .. veering towards the con temporary.. in a subtle manner. That’s what my brand is all about.

Which is the fashion hub — Delhi or Mumbai?
Delhi is the hub. It has the infrastructure to hold fashion shows. All the main designers are based in Delhi. Delhi creates fashion .. Mumbai takes it forward! Fashion in Mumbai is laidback while in Delhi it’s up to date. It’s as different as Los Angeles is from New York.

What is the future of men’s wear in India?
It has a major market in the country. With not too many players in the market, I’m aiming for the right merchandise in the perfect price bracket.

What are the colours for men this season?
Whites and earthy tones will be strong this season. Every designer ultimately dreams of designing for movies.

What are your plans?
I agree Bollywood is a very strong market. Every designer obviously looks for the right opportunity to make an entry. Designers, who say that they don't care, suffer from a case of sour grapes.
I do personal wardrobes for Bollywood actors. I have their support. Trust me, no one supports you here unless you can deliver the goods.

With Karan Johar as a close friend, it's surprising you haven't yet made a foray into the movies?
My friendship with Karan has nothing to do with my work. You can’t use friends to get work.
