Denim’s close cousin

Jeggings, a cross between jeans and leggings, have emerged as a hot global trend sported by fashion icons such as Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale, Rihanna, Gywneth Paltrow and Beyonce.

Call it the jeans’ slimmer sibling — jeggings are finding their spot as winter’s favourite style staple this season. Jeggings, a cross of jeans and leggings is a big hit; global fashion icons such as Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale, Rihanna, Gywneth Paltrow and Beyonce are seen sporting the as-skinny-as-it-gets jeggings.

On the fashion runways too, the autumn winter trends showed a tilt towards fitted silhouettes and clingy jeggings rather than slouchy pants as was the trend two seasons ago. B’ town ladies Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut too are quick to lap up the international trend. “Jeggings are quite versatile, and they do a better job than skinny jeans or leggings in keeping the cold away,” says Mansi Zaveri of FCUK.

A global trend
Though jeggings came into vogue a season ago, it is only now that the trend has picked up. Designer Sabbah Sharma says, “Jeggings look superb on long toned legs, paired with a long top. Katie Holmes looks stunning in jeggings. Malaika Arora Khan and Sonam Kapoor look great too.”

Frame it right
Make sure jeggings suit your body. “If you're short, wear jeggings with platform heels to give your legs some length. In winter, jeggings looks best with long boots. But if you're heavy on your bottom, then wear it with long sweaters and a scarf. You can use wedge boots as they are comfortable and add some inches to your height,” suggests designer Preeti Ghai.

“If you are have a big frame, avoid jeggings with big patterns and prints. Team it with trench coats," says designer Navneet Randhawa. “Try out dark colours in jeggings. They have a slimming effect,” says designer Alpa Thacker. Worldwide, expecting mommies and new mothers are seen flaunting this trend as jeggings are super stretchy and hence easy to wear and comfortable.

How to get it right
Curvaceous:
The best way to flaunt curves with jeggings is to team it up with flowy tunic tops. Wear a belt over it and this will flaunt your hour-glass figure to perfection. Avoid wearing jegging to office with a short top. However, you can wear it with a long cardigan or a fitted coat.

Slim and trim: People with smaller bottoms and heavier tops usually look good in jeggings. Women with heavy bottoms should stick to jeans or wear dark coloured jeggings with long kurtis or long tops.

Evening glam: Team your jegging with a chunky sweater, a string of pearls and a small-heeled boot for an evening party.

Short change: Short or ankle length jeggings are available in the market. The thumb rule is to avoid wearing them with heels. Instead, pair them with bright chappals and ballerinas, or for winter wear, tuck the jeggings inside your boots.
