It’s time to celebrate Indian fashion in global style. While Indian models Ninja Singh and Lakshmi Menon walked the ramp at New York Fashion Week, Delhi-born designer Ashish Gupta got rave reviews for his show at the London Fashion Week that ended on Wednesday. Gupta’s collection, showcased on Tuesday, was heavily influenced by India and included saffron stoles with Sita Ram written over them and Buddha embossed tunics.
Gupta, who has a celebrity clientele comprising Madonna, Victoria Beckham and Kelly Osborne, did his schooling in Delhi before going on to study fashion in UK. While Gupta’s India inspired sensibilities wowed London, it was Mumbai designers Falguni and Shane Peacock’s edgy outfits that created ripples on the New York Fashion Week runway (Feb 9-16) earlier this month. “We showed on the same day, (Feb 12) as Victoria Bechkam and Yohji Yamamoto. It indeed goes on to say that Indian designers are now being taken seriously. This is our second showing at NYFW,” says Falguni.
It was not just the Indian designers who did India proud at the New York Fashion Week. Indian model Ninja Singh walked the runway. Singh, who was the winner of Hindustan Times’ Ford Model’s ‘Supermodel of the World-India’ contest last year and has been signed by Ford Models, says, “It feels awesome to be a part of the international modelling world.”
Singh, 23, who walked the ramp for designers Juan Carlos Obando, Alexander Wang, Migel Adrover and Gretchen Jones, is also set to walk the runways at Milan and Paris Fashion Week to be held later this month. Singh says she has already been booked by a few international designers for their shows.
“Designers here love my unconventional looks and six feet frame. When they say that I can be a supermodel like fellow Indians Lakshmi Menon and Ujjwala Raut, it feels great,” says Singh. Lakshmi Menon walked the ramp for Cushnie et Ochs Fall 2012.
Naked models at London Fashion Week
It was an eye-popping moment when Welsh hat designer Robyn Coles decided to parade her models nude on the ramp in her debut show during London Fashion Week on Tuesday. Among other models who walked nude, Coles also had eight months-pregnant former Miss Wales, Sophia Cahill, catwalk wearing just the designer’s hats.
Models of different shapes and sizes were sent to the ramp with a message that with hats it doesn’t matter what size or shape you are. The 31-year-old designer admitted to arranging for the nude catwalk to gain some much-needed publicity.
