Drama is the buzzword for the Wills India Lifestyle Week, that kicks off in the Capital tomorrow, as Indian designers pay tribute to British fashion legend Alexander McQueen.
Known for his dramatic designs, over-the-top accessories and high-energy shows, McQueen has been the highlight of fashion weeks the world over, ever since his sudden death in February.
At WIFW some designers have collections, or dresses, inspired by or dedicated to McQueen. Designer Kavita Bhartia’s opening garment is very similar to McQueen’s style. “It’s an over the top garment with lot of pleating, textures and antique work he was so famous for. It sculpts the body and I know many other designers would be able to relate this dress to Alexander,” she says.
The gladiator look made famous by McQueen has inspired designer Charu Parashar. “My show will be very dramatic as McQueen was known for drama. The show will have a gladiator look. I’ll be using a lot of special helmets too.”
Designer Nida Mahmood says, “I dedicate my collection to McQueen. He was the czar of fashion. My collection is based on scrap, and McQueen, too had done a collection around scrap last season.” At the London Fashion Week, earlier this month, a tribute wall was dedicated to MCQueen, while 40 iPods displaying his image were hung at the Victoria House at the same time. At Naomi Campbell’s show ‘Fashion for Relief Haiti’ the end was a tribute to the designer.
