Fashion gets all ruffled up

Ruffles seem to be the hot trend on the red carpet this season, and the style is here to stay.

The red carpet season is often an indication of the major fashion trends that will be followed by avid fashion watchers. With the international red carpet season in its full swing, this time, the fashionistas are seen flaunting the soft ruffled look, to bring back the feminine detailing.
Recently Singer Kelly Osbourne wore a one-shoulder purple ruffled dress. Emma Watson stole the show at the BAFTAS with her Valentino nude gown with a ruffle shoulder. At Golden Globe Awards Catherine Zeta Jones was seen in a green Monique Lhuiller ruffle gown. Designer Payal Jain says, “Ruffle detailing looks delicate and feminine, yet, glamorous and sexy.”
Ruffle remained a favoured trend even at the VH1 Critic’s Choice Movie Awards. Socialite Kim Kardashian looked hot in a Vera Wang ruffled tail gown, actor Winona Ryder and Mad Men actor Cara Buono wore a slate grey J Mendel strapless gown with ruffled draping. “The red carpet is ruled by ruffles — single or in layers, on sleeves, around the neck or on the hemlines,” says designer Jyotee Khaitan.

How to get ruffles right

LESS IS MORE: “There is already so much happening in the ruffled and scalloped dress that accessories must remain minimal and non conflicting. Make-up should be natural in neutral tones to compliment the dimensions of the dress, let the ruffled dress steal the show,” suggests designer Payal Jain.

VARIED FABRICS: These dresses come in varied fabrics with different finishes such as cotton, knitted, organza, chiffon and silk. But if you want to look dressy, there is nothing quite like a chiffon ruffle dress or silk ruffle dress. Chiffon has been a favourite amongst the celebs too because of its lightweight feel and comfort.

VOLUMINOUS: Ruffles add volume and fullness to the part of the dress they are added to. So understand the shape of your body and be careful before buying one for yourself. A ruffle top is a good choice if you are small busted as it adds fullness, but avoid a ruffle top if you are heavy busted.

BODY WISE: If you are heavily built at the bottom, skirts with ruffle detailing below, will only make you appear more bulky. But those with narrow hips and long legs can choose a skirt with many frills.

FULL ON: When you choose a dress that has ruffles all over, stick to knee length rather than the full length.
