From day wear to a night out, culottes are versatile. This old hit is making a comeback and celebrities around the world are sporting them. Culottes are the new 'it' thing this season.
"They are definitely in because of their look, they are not long, above the ankle and have a loose fit," says city-based designer Rimi Nayak, adding, "Their smooth structure makes them a hit among fashion lovers. Culottes are comfortable as they are made out of linen and suiting fabric."
Fashion designer Anita Dongre believes that culottes are the best choice this season as winter merges into spring. "This pant-shorts hybrid is gaining major style momentum due to its fundamental versatility- slipping effortlessly into sleek work-wear, sporty luxe and neutral ensembles. They are also transitional, the perfect piece to wear this season," she says.
Culottes are short trousers which look like a skirt given their voluptuous bottom and flattering hemline. Right accessories and make-up with special attention to the hair can do wonders with these billowy pants. Bright colours such as blue, red, oranges, according to Rimi, are in vogue this season.
Dia Mirza (L) keeps it simple by pairing culottes with a white and black sleeveless top while Vanessa Hudgens (R) creates her own style statement by sporting a pair of green velvet culottes with a short top and denim jacket
Anita says that one can sport culottes on a date night and pair it with a camisole and strappy heels or clash jewel tones for an easy way to rock the look.
"Structured culottes can be balanced with a tailored blazer and you can give it a casual daytime flair with a graphic sweatshirt," she says adding that Malaika Arora Khan and Ileana D'Cruz will soon be sporting culottes made by her.
Unlike palazzos and straight pants that look good on tall women, culottes are for all.
"Even a short petite girl looks good in it. Culottes in denims, prints and plaits in pastel colours such as pale brown, pale blue, beige and mint green are in this season. In fact, my clients are buying them a lot these days," smiles designer Sayantan Sarkar.
The designer recommends that one should go bold and experiment with culottes.
"Short tops look best with culottes as it gives you a defined shoulder line and also highlights a defined waistline," says Sayantan.
