Carla Bruni-Sarkozy’s interpretation of "First Lady Chic" has not only made fans out of fashion mag editors and bloggers, but it has managed to influence how ‘normal’ people like us dress too.
Her brand of power dressing, mixes wearable shapes and styles with ultra stylish cuts and accessories. Whether it’s a grey suit spurced up with a colourful slim belt or a a sombre black dress (like here), her style isn’t just effortlessly chic but also can easily be emulated. Here’s how you can go about it.
Clutch it right
"Nothing beats a classic black clutch. It works well at all times and works with casual and dressed-up looks," says designer Jenjum Gadi. But take a cue from Carla to turn it up a notch and spruce your clutch up with understated embellishments, like beads or zardosi embroidery.
The secret to Carla’s easy yet chic style lies in the fact that she sticks to classic staples like the little black dress. But instead of following the exact shapes and styles, she adds little modern interpretations to them. "Besides the right contemporary fits and styles, she’s also exceptionally fit and healthy. And this shows in her style," says fashion editor, Varun Rana. So, get ready to risk it and invest in a LBD and a gym membership!
And the mantra that Carla follows with her taste for sober colours and fits is also seen in her choice of jewels. "The tennis bracelet she’s wearing is the right amount of bling without going overboard," says stylist Meetu Booker-Soni. If you’re on a budget, go for crystals instead of diamonds.
Put a ring on it
With her marriage to President Sarkozy, Carla’s flamboyant, bohemian style quickly changed into it’s current understated avatar. And the ultimate symbol of this transformation is best witnessed in her wedding band. “Instead of a simple eternity band like her, go for a little more bling. After all, it’s the symbol of everlasting love!” says designer Shazia Saleem.
All about heels
Though many people argue that Carla’s love for flats and kitten heels is because of her diminutive bijou, President Sarkozy. But lest we forget, the 60s are in trend. “Kitten heels are not only comfortable, but they are power dressing without being dominating,” says Gadi. Stick to solid colours like black or go for patent leather. If you must play with colours, stick to single tones.
Brace yourself for winters, Carla Style
To tackle the winter in true blue Carla Parisian chic style, follow her fail-safe mantra of contemporary classics.
1. Winter fabrics like tweed and wool blends should be a must in your wardrobe.
2. Belted overcoats are a favourite of the First Lady and they should also be yours. But instead of tweed, which can look a bit mature, go for wool blends.
3. You’ll find a lot more contemporary prints and patterns in such fabrics too.
4. You can also go for solid colours like purple and aubergine, which even Bruni-Sarkozy favours.
5. Also take a cue from Pre-Sarkozy, Carla and go for knee-high boots with a slight heel. After all, power dressing can never be complete with the right shoes!
