It is the onset of the holiday season, which means countless parties to attend vis-a-vis tackling the task of looking chic as you fight the winter chill. While the LBD (Little Black Dress) is always a safe option, how about taking a cue from the fashionistas, who are donning the metallic trend, this season.

From actors Deepika Padukone to singer Selena Gomez — celebs have been seen sporting dresses in metallic grey, silver and gunmetal in various luxe textures such as sequins, chiffon, silk and leather.

Talking about the trend, designer Rahul Khanna says, “Silver is certainly hot this season, and it’s a perfect shade to celebrate the festivities in.”

However, one might think that the metallic or the silver look suits best on the red carpet, and might look a bit jarring on the streets. Even for evening parties or a Christmas bash, it is therefore important that you balance your look with the right accessories.

“Tone metallic garments with a matte jersey, denim or knits. You can attempt the trend during the day with lurex pullovers with a pair of jeans or a full midi skirt,” suggests fashion stylist Nidhi Jacob. Fashion designer Surily Goel adds, “The metallic look adds weight to your personality, so go ahead and take the plunge. Make sure you pair it well with the right shoes as the right accessories can make or break this look.”

How to get the look right
For a pop star look: If you think silver is too soft for you, and you prefer a grunge appeal, then toughen up your look with leather accessories.
Wear sparkle as separates: Pair your wardrobe classics with a sequined blazer for an instant trend update.
Don’t go overboard: You don’t have to match the tone of the silver dress with your handbag or shoes. Mix and match luxe tones or rich black accessories to balance the look without looking like a Christmas tree.
Go minimal on accessories: Let glitzy pieces speak for themselves so keep accessories minimal
Try new combinations: Experiment with new accessories that fit the sparkle trend to the T. Hair clips, shrugs, collars, maxi skirts, belts, chokers, necklace, handbags are all available in the metallic grey sheen for the season.
Androgyny ahoy: If you are in love with the androgynous look, then you can balance the soft sparkle by incorporating it with your menswear inspired pieces. Cue: Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall-Winter 2011 runway pieces of cropped trousers and tuxedo jackets in shimmer.
Rich tones pairing: Silver though not subtle, is a shade that matches with ruby and red tones easily. Wear crimson or maroon lipstick and nail paint to make your look fresh and less dated.
