The New Year has just begun, and if this year your resolution is to get a makeover, then start with changing your hairstyle. Opt for a hairstyle that not only goes with your personality, but is also in sync with the current trends. And, if you think that just getting a haircut will do the job, think again. Styling and maintaining your tresses is what will give you that edge.

The year’s new hair trends seen on international fashion runways range from a low-maintenance distressed look, like a casual braid, to party hair decked up with crystal add-ons and fancy clips. Hair and beauty expert Shahnaz Husain suggests keeping the length long as long tresses in various styles are dominating the trends. “The layered look will be in vogue. Or you can also have cascading waves. Even soft curls giving a natural look, especially in the lower ends of the hair are in. One can also use hair extensions to get flowing locks,” she says.

Beauty expert Blossom Kochhar lays emphasis on experimenting but strictly following a natural regimen. “Curls are also back with a bang, and one can opt for loose curls instead of the tight ones,” she says. Classic ponytails and braids are also making a comeback. “You can also tie up your hair in a stylish bun and use glamorous hair accessories. Irregular side-swept bangs continue to be a rage this year as well,” says Husain.

Hair experts maintain that whatever style you choose, shiny, healthy locks never go out of style. “Avoid blow drying the hair and let them dry naturally and never comb the hair when they’re wet. Make sure to apply some serum as it protects the hair if it needs to be styled,” says Kochhar.
