Hello sunshine

The sun isn’t the only thing getting brighter. A welcome change from the earthy hues of winter, summer seems to have made a splash in the celebrity wardrobe.

The sun isn’t the only thing getting brighter. A welcome change from the earthy hues of winter, summer seems to have made a splash in the celebrity wardrobe.

Fruitilicious
A fruity orange seems to be the colour of choice for most of the Bollywood brigade while lighter shades of citrus also find favour. Designer Nikasha Tawadey, whose summer resort line for Lakme Fashion Week showed a lot of happy shades like peach and yellow, says, “Summer has a psychological effect on people, it brings in a happy, light spirit. This gets reflected in their wardrobes and you tend to see brighter, more romantic shades being worn. Even the two festivals of summer, Holi and Baisakhi, celebrate colour.”

If you choose to wear one colour from head-to-toe, Tawadey suggests keeping it simple. “Wearing one simple, beautiful colour can be quite potent, so don’t over accessorise it,” she advises.

Jewellery designer Shaheen Abbas reveals that coral will reflect strongly in her new jewellery line which will make its debut in May. “Coral and turquoise have been going strong for a while now. Elements like rose quartz and onyx also have that fresh appeal. In my new line, we will have plenty of neck pieces and cuffs using just one or two of these colours.”

Don’t be boring like Gul Panag and wear one shade from head to tow. Notice that even her Kholapuri chappals are canary yellow? With no other colours to lift this pale shade, Gul’s look leaves us lukewarm. Another brighter way to wear this yellow churidar would have been with shoes in a contrasting shade (turquoise) or a complimentary hue (tan, ivory) Ethnic accessories like big wooden bangles or a matte gold necklace wouldn’t hurt either.

Hazel may look like she fell out of a box of crayons, but her look started off in the right place. The bright summery tunic with playful appliqué work well when paired with strappy gold sandals. We say her look came undone when she unwisely tied her hair into this high ponytail and decided to paint her eyelids blue… watching Avatar too many times perhaps?

Daughter of Bollywood designer Neeta Lulla and budding artiste, Nishka Lulla, is often caught in frocks that would better suit a teenybopper. But the younger Lulla gets it right in this burst of colour that complements her ‘new-kid-on-the-block’ status. Don’t miss the on-trend turquoise heels matched with thick bangles. Caution: this look is only for those in the age group of 18-25. More mature lovers of colour can try pairing tangerine blouses with skirts or wide-legged pants in white and beige.

Avoiding make-up is where you draw the line. It’s best not to have your clothes competing with the colours on your face.

Young stylist and starlet Shahzahn Padamsee is slowly getting the hang of the red carpet. Though we’re not in love with the silly lace trim at the hemline of her dress, the halter neck and floaty chiffon are perfect for the summer. Padamsee chose to go with just one eye-popping accessory — her clutch — using the beige shoes to balance the colour excess out.
