The festive season is here and you surely want to look your best. While the right dress, makeup and accessories will boost your look, everything can fall flat if you have bad hair. The changing weather further adds to hair issues. So before you go for a new style or haircut, ensure that your hair is completely healthy, damage free and well prepared to face the harsh winters.
Instead of blindly going for a treatment or mask for dry hair or oily hair, identify your exact problem. Is it dandruff, frizzy hair, damaged hair, dull hair or uncontrolled hair fall? Then, find a solution. While you can head to the umpteen salons in the city, a much easier and cost-effective way is to use stuff available at home. “The good old remedies of grandma such as hair masks prepared from kitchen items such as fruits, yogurt, honey, olive oil, have always proven to be the best solutions,” says Raveela Sharma, GM, Vedic Spa Mantra.
Regular care is more effective than one-time treatments. “Have hot oil therapy once a week. Brush the hair to get rid of impurities. Heat sesame seed (til) oil or olive oil and apply on the hair. If the hair is dry and damaged, pure coconut oil or pure almond oil may be applied. Using your finger tips, massage the scalp gently in small rotating movements. This helps improve blood circulation to the follicles, boosting hair growth. Follow it up with a hot towel wrap,” suggests beauty expert Shahnaz Husain.
Egg yogurt mask: This simple mask can do great things for dry and dandruff-laden hair. Mix a cup of yogurt with one egg yolk and a table spoon of lemon juice. The mask cleans the scalp, moisturises and strengthens hair and gives them a smooth lustrous shine.
Coconut milk and avocado hair mask: Coconut milk is rich in protein and avocados are considered to be anti-fungal
and antibacterial so they are great for treating dandruff. Mash a ripe avocado to pulp and mix it well with half cup coconut milk. Heat the mixture until it is lukewarm. Apply the mask from the root to tip while massaging your scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes and wash your hair thoroughly.
To tame frizzy and curly hair
Honey yogurt mask: Mix in a bowl half cup honey, half cup yogurt, 3 drops of Rosemary essential oil, and 1 tablespoon almond oil. Massage deep into hair from root ends. Leave it on for 1 hour and then shampoo it out. This mask will help you tame frizzy hair.
Fruit smoothie mask: Mix half a banana, half musk melon and one fourth avocado with one tablespoon wheat germ oil, one tablespoon yogurt and one capsule of Vitamin E to a thick paste. Apply evenly on the hair. This fruit smoothie is great to tame curly hair, and it also helps in giving hair a soft a glossy shine.
For hairfall control and volume
Banana smoothie: If you have thin hair or are worried with hairfall, bananas can be your best friend. They make a wonderful hair mask when blended with an egg, 3 teaspoons each of honey and milk, and 5 teaspoons of olive oil. Massage the mixture onto your hair and scalp and leave it on for a half hour before you shampoo it out. This will strengthen your hair and will give it volume.
Green tea hair mask: Slather your hair in this mask for stimulating healthy hair growth. Mix 2 tbsp fresh green tea (strong), 1 tbsp mustard powder and 1 egg yolk; until the mix has a creamy consistency to it, add more green tea in case it becomes too thick. Part your hair, and apply this mixture. Leave it on for about 25 minutes. Rinse well, shampoo and condition as normal. Use the mask once or twice a week to get long and thick hair.
For damaged hair
Vinegar and egg mask: To restore health to rough, damaged hair, mix 2 teaspoons vinegar with one teaspoon pure glycerine and one egg. Beat them together, and massage lightly into the hair. Wear a shower cap and leave it on for half an hour before washing the hair.
Honey milk hair mask: It is aimed at giving damaged hair its lustre back. Mix equal quantities of fresh milk and yogurt, pour 4 tablespoons of pure honey and mix it to blend well, add 3 drops of pure olive oil and stir until all the ingredients are well-combined. Now refrigerate the mixture for 10 minutes and stir it gently to blend well. Wash your hair and absorb the moisture with a towel. Then, apply the mask from tip to roots and massage the scalp using fingertips. Wrap your hair with a hot towel and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse well with water.
For natural conditioning
The egg mask: Scramble two eggs with two teaspoons of water, and work the mixture into damp hair. Let it soak in for 15 minutes before you wash your hair. The proteins in the mask make it excellent for hair shine and lustre.
The honey effect: Prepare this simple conditioning mask by mixing equal parts of honey and olive oil, and rub the mixture into your hair. Wrap your locks in plastic wrap and shampoo after 30 minutes for shining and healthy looking hair.
