From elaborate costumes to equally elaborate make up and hair do, the members of various dance societies of DU, do not spare any effort to add substance to their acts.

These dance societies do it themselves, unlike other societies in the varsity where dresses are usually outsourced. The costumes should be comfortable, well fitted, bright and blingy to look good on stage. “We buy fancy cloth pieces from Chandni Chowk and get them tailored according to our size,” says Prachi Jindal, a member of Panache, SRCC’s dance group, that spends Rs 1,500 on costume, props and makeup per member.

However, some play smart by teaming up pieces of previous years’ costumes with the new ones. “We do this at times. It’s an effective way of cost-cutting,” says Pooja Singh, president of the western dance group of Lady Shri Ram college for women.
For the dance society of Miranda House College, a member designed the costume and got it stitched from a tailor in Dwarka. “It cost us Rs 1,000 per person. We know best about our acts, so we did it ourselves,” says Gunjan Joshi, a member.

As for the make-up to complete the look, these societies do it themselves.
