How glamour ruled the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival Day 1

Gowns with billowing trains dominated the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival on Day 1.

Even though the Cannes Film Festival is a film event, it is also one of the most eagerly awaited events on the fashion calendar.

As expected, on Day 1 (May 11), the red carpet wasn’t devoid of the glamour it showcases every year. From shimmering gowns with blinding bling to dresses with body-skimming silhouettes — there was a lot to keep the fashion folk inspired. But the most prominent trend of the day and something that most celebrities opted for was outfits with floor-sweeping trains.

Anna Kendrick: Anna looked smashing as she made her first red-carpet appearance at the festival this year. She wore a yellow Stella McCartney dress. The slinky form-flattering outfit, with a plunging neckline and a long train, was all about uptown glamour. (REUTERS)
Blake Lively: The actor wore a muted Versace gown with strategically placed cutouts that upped her glamour quotient. The figure-hugging gown had a flirty silhouette, and also gave a peek of her baby bump. (REUTERS)
Eva Longoria: Eva shimmied into the night in a white ensemble, which had an embellished nude upper. The two-tone Pamela Roland dress, which featured a trail, showed off her curves. (REUTERS)
Susan Sarandon: While most female celebrities stuck to feminine designs, Susan Sarandon and Victoria Beckham decided to take the androgynous route. While Beckham sported her own creation — a snug strapless top and trousers — Sarandon impressed in a black pantsuit and a crisp white buttoned-up shirt. (REUTERS)
