Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a name to reckon with in the field of fashion, is excited about his first stint on the small screen.

The 37-year-old, who has been in the industry for over a decade, is the designer for the new season of the show Band Baaja Bride, and will be spearheading the task of bridal makeovers.

Talking about his association with the show which will be aired on NDTV Good Times, he says, “The show gave me the opportunity to connect with common girls - the real India. I get to design for celebrities, socialites and models, but this show gave me a chance to connect with untapped market, which at times can’t even afford my creations, but certainly aspires to wear it.”

He adds, “It has been a personal journey for me. I went to the homes of these girls, ate with them and interacted with them.”

Interestingly, 53-year-old legendary pop diva Madonna, and timeless beauty and Bollywood actor Rekha are people who Sabya wants to design for. “Madonna is an ultimate fashion icon and it would be great if I get to design for her. As for Rekha, she has been consistent with her look and that’s a big deal. Watching her draped in kanjeevaram with open hair and oodles of jewellery is a sight."

Ask him why he is not participating in the upcoming Wills Lifestyle India fashion week in Delhi, and the designer says, “The show took a lot of my time and I didn’t want to do a half-hearted show.”

Sabyasachi also claims that he believes in the concept of a single fashion week in the country. “The multiple fashion weeks completely dilute the essence of fashion. These fashion weeks, make fashion weak.” he says.
