This is one coronation we didn’t see coming. Jewellery designer Farah Khan Ali has scored a coup; with pop star Beyoncé picking one of her creations to wear in the artwork of her album, 4.

The elaborate Swarovski crystal crown, bursting with orange, yellow and brown crystals and pearls, was selected by the star’s stylist, without Farah’s knowledge. “The crown and a necklace had been made for the fifth anniversary of Runway Rocks, a fashion event that invited designers from all over the world to show their crystal-embellished designs on a global platform,” she reveals, adding, “It was only last week that the team there informed me that Beyoncé’s stylist had requested the crown, and it would be worn by her.”

beyonceFarah says, ecstatically, "What makes this more special is that there were so many amazing designs from all over the world in their archive, and Beyoncé still chose mine. She’s the epitome of beauty and grace, a perfect example of the goddess who was my inspiration for the piece." The designer has recently seen her creations worn by Serena Williams, who liked her ring so much that she requested to it, and worn by stars on the Emmy red carpet.

But she points out, “It’s sad that in India, you only get appreciation for your work when you’re recognized by the west. I’ve never paid anyone to wear my creations or paid stylists to recommend them to stars.”

Being Hrithik Roshan’s sister-in-law and DJ Aqeel’s wife might lead people to believe that Farah’s just another rich socialite with money to spend, a belief the designer shoots down. “I am a trained gemologist and know my work inside out. Some people may believe that because I’m born in a certain family or have important connections, it’s easy for me. But the secret to my success is just hard work and commitment.”

The designer, who is already preparing to send her jewellery off to the US for the Golden Globes, admits thatshe’d now like to see her “bold pieces worn by Angelina Jolie and Rihanna.”
