Just why is Glitz, the fashion society of Kamala Nehru College, so different from the rest.

They are stylish, they have attitude and they belong to one of Delhi University’s most glamourous college societies — GLITZ, the fashion society of South Campus’s Kamala Nehru College. Formed seven years ago, this society has been one of the top achievers in college fests such as AIIMS Pulse, BITS Pilani and more.

The fashion society is divided in two groups. One team manages backstage action that includes styling, designing of garments, hairstyle, makeup, choreography and music. The other is the human resource — the models. “There are 17 members in this society with 14 models and three backstage hands,” says Shweta Acharya, the GLITZ president, a final year English Honours student.

Unlike other colleges who have stylists, fashion designers, choreographers, the members of this society do it all themselves. They compose the music for ramp, choreograph on their own, and also do clothes, hair and makeup.

“A show is not just about walking the ramp; it is also about putting out the right realm of the theme. Every year, we come up with a new theme. We don’t believe in looking trashy just for fashion show’s heck,” says Shweta.

To get into GLITZ, a girl has to go through two rounds of auditions. She need to have the right attitude, the ability to carry with aplomb any kinds of dress and most importantly, she must be a good team player. A backstage girl must be creative.

And no, GLITZ doesn’t believe that you need to be tall and pencil-thin to fit into their world. “I’m 5ft 4 inches tall and I am a model because here we don’t just focus on a girl’s external appearance,” says Parinita Samanta, a final year student of advertising. “For being a model in GLITZ you need to have something more substantial. We don’t want a model who is 5ft 10 inches tall but has her attitude all wrong,”

The life of a GLITZ girl is not confined to dressing rooms, mirrors and the ramp alone. Each girl, whether she is a model or a backstage hand, gives her inputs in all the aspects that make up a sizzling fashion show.

“I joined GLITZ in 2008 and that very year, we won six competitions in a row,” says Priyamvada Mathur, a GLITZ member. “There’s no professional help here. We as models do the ramp walk but I must add that it’s the members of our backstage team that are the ones who make us win,” she adds.
