Model Lakshmi Menon, one of the very few Indian models to have really made it big abroad, has got another feather in her cap.
Lakshmi, who has walked the ramp for most major designers and been the face of labels like Hermès, Givenchy and Max Mara, is the first Indian model to have shot for a 12-page editorial photo spread for US Vogue, edited by Anna Wintour, a legend in the fashion world.
This puts Lakshmi in the same league as the world’s biggest models like Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. Lakshmi, however, did not think too highly about this assignment until her agent told her, “You know how big this is?” Now she agrees, “Your first solo editorial in US Vogue has huge prestige, I believe.”
The shoot was in Goa and the photos by Mikael Jansson are in the magazine’s May edition. Before this, Lakshmi shot for the cover of the UK-based glossy Dazed & Confused, and fashion pundits are billing her the ‘girl of the season’. The worldwide print campaign titled ‘Hermès Pink Indian Orange’ was shot by Lakshmi’s long-time friend and ace photographer Prabuddha Dasgupta.
Lakshmi attributes her success in America to the election of Obama as the President. She says, “It has spiked the American interest in non-Caucasian girls.”
