Once in a while we come across a dress that is so loved by the celebrities (or their stylists) that it makes an appearance not once but twice on the red carpet. This is the case with the Marc Jacobs Resort 2011 lace dress that was worn by Hollywood actors Helena Bonham Carter and Freida Pinto on different occasions.

While Freida was a little too fashion forward by wearing this resort collection dress back in October 2010, Helena chose to wear it in the beginning of January 2011. We ask Vogue India fashion stylist Edward Lalrempuia and Senior Fashion Editor for Femina magazine – Nitasha Gaurav, to tell us which celebrity wore the dress better.

Even though the dress fit the actors in quite a similar fashion, the rankings from the experts suggest a clear winner. Then how could one wear this dress right and score a perfect 10. The answer is to wow the audience and a leave a longing impression instead of looking average. The Slumdog Millionaire actress has been making headlines due to her amazing fashion choices, but at this particular appearance the actress tried to channel Old Hollywood look and failed to win the hearts of our fashion experts. As put by Edward “Nothing in particular that I love about Freida’s look but she and the dress looks good.”

Could it be that the dress itself is too complicated because of its many textures? Not completely true. “I like Marc Jacobs’ spin on the classic black and white dress with this one. It's a tricky dress though with that flush of lace in both bodice and skirt. Whether it looks nice or not depends a lot on how it's worn.” cues Nitasha. Indeed, the dress will make a strong style quotient that the celebrities are seeking, but with the wrong accessories and makeup the dress could loose its charm. The wearer should only add accessories that do not take attention away from the dress. The hair and makeup should also be kept minimal without clashing the dress. With these expert suggestions in mind, the celebs in question – or anyone for that matter, could make memorable red-carpet history.

“She's kept it simpler with the pumps and nude makeup. The dishevelled hair works with it and along with the pearl string, The look manages to be somewhat eccentric and whimsical, making it quite appealing. ” says Nitasha.

“Its refreshing to see her in such a toned dress which is so unlike her usual style!” says Edward.

Freida Pinto at the 18th Annual Hamptons Film Festival

“I would have suggested her to go without these earrings with this dress. Instead a pair of simple solitaire diamond earrings would have been nice. ” says Edward

“Freida has too many elements competing for attention - the crimson lips, the smokey eyes, the strappy sandals, the white earrings. Also the pulled-back hair is much too severe for this ensemble.” says Nitasha
