This month the Van Heusen Men’s Fashion Week kicks off in Delhi and Lakme Fashion Week begins in Mumbai in September. Then comes the Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week in Delhi in October. Frankly, it’s never been this interesting before.
Of course, I have only mentioned those fashion weeks that I thought were relevant as things stand. There are many other fashion weeks that are happening around… in Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur… and this time when I went to Kerala, people there were asking me whether I was aware of the Kerala Fashion Week that they were planning to organise.
Frankly, I hadn’t heard of any such fashion week happening in Kerala till then. The fact that even such a small and educated state as Kerala is falling prey to such fashion hunger made me feel a bit dejected! Let’s get this straight, such shows, as the ones coming in small cities, will be hoping to make more business for the organisers than the designers. So the business of fashion is just for them and no one else.
In any case, Kolkata called off its fashion week just a few days before it was to begin last season. Let’s see what will be the fate of the rest. After having completed a successful FDCI Couture Week, now we will see a riot of men’s wear in the coming days. Then it’s back to the ladies and their garments for the next couple of months.
With the introduction of men’s week last year, many more have got a chance to work with the industry. Male models who have had a tough time in the past are back smiling (some of them even get paid Rs 20,000 even after discount at the event) and designers are making outfits that men can actually wear and still look like men! It’s going to be a riot of fashion for the next 90 days!
