Miss Gibraltar Kaiane Aldorino lifted the crown at the 2009 Miss World pageant in Johannesburg on Saturday. Miss Mexico, Perla Beltran Acosta, was declared the first runner up, followed by Miss South Africa, Tatum Keshwar.

India’s Pooja Chopra, who was nursing a twisted ankle, failed to make it to the final round, dashing India’s hopes of getting the title back to the country. India has not won the title since 2000 when actress Priyanka Chopra brought the crown home.

Chopra, who was on the panel of judges for the event, said it is wrong to expect the winning beauty to change the world. “Miss World is not the President of a country, and people should not expect her to be that.”

“She’s just a girl who has been given this pedestal of power and position and she is going to do her bit to help whoever needs help,” she said.
