Just in time to spoil you for the wedding season, two of the city’s favourite designers are opening their flagship stores. After a couple of months’ delay, Narendra Kumar Ahmed launched his Khar store on Thursday. Catering to stars such as Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham and Kangna Ranaut, Ahmed felt that setting up shop in the suburbs was a good business idea.

“This is where the younger generation that likes to spend money on clothes, lives,” he reasons. “We are also closer to the film industry, and most of my celebrity clients would find it difficult to travel to town. There is also a large expat community in Khar.”

Ahmed’s store will stock both menswear and womenswear. The designer is also planning to launch a line of accessories early next summer. “This store is a complete sampling of everything that the Narendra Kumar label has to offer. We have denim wear, formals ethnic wear for men, and evening gowns and fun party dresses for women,” he says. “We will also soon launch our Indian wear for women. I don’t know how we’ve managed to survive so long without it.”

Starting young

In her early 20s, Masaba Gupta is one of the youngest designers to launch her own store. On Juhu-Tara road, the store will carry Gupta’s signature lines, including the wedding collection she recently showcased at the Lakme Fashion Week. “I’m very young to be starting my own store and my biggest fear is that I have no experience in running a business,” laughs Gupta. “Right now things are going smoothly, but I will start styling for movies soon.”

With saris at Rs 5,000, how can she afford to keep her pricing so affordable? “I’ve always tried to give people the best price,” she says. “I keep my production cost as low as possible, but don’t compromise on using the best quality fabrics.”
