Even the most boring outfit can look gorgeous if you accessorise it right. While till some time back, it was a dangling earrings that could bring the zing, today, it’s the statement necklace.

Stylist and jewellery designer Vanadana Dewan says, “Statement jewellery has the ability to brighten up any outfit. If you are dressed in a simple black dress for the day, and want to perk up your look, simply throw on an interesting, bold piece of jewellery around your neck.”

Trend-setters, such as US first lady Michelle Obama, Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor, and socialites Parmeshwar Godrej and Twinkle Khanna, have been branded ambassadors of this style statement. However, if you are not too much of a neckpiece person, then jewellery designer Amrita Hans suggests, “Start with a necklace that is striking but small, and as you get accustomed to the look, you can graduate to wearing chunkier pieces.

And while this style suits both Indian and western wear, stylists suggest you go easy on make-up and hair. Both branded stores and jewellery designers are stocking up on the statement pieces, which cost anywhere between Rs 2000 to Rs 75,000. Hans adds, “The price varies, depending on the semi-precious and precious stones used and also the size of the piece.” With winter here, Dewan says, “simple high neck sweaters and dresses can be glammed up with such bold pieces. But, she warns, “You don’t want to end up looking like a clown, so it is important to choose your pieces with immense care.”
