Goth and old world charm ruled the ramp on Day 4 of Couture Week
Designer: Shantanu & Nikhil
Known for: Experimental cuts and fabrics
This designer duo created both Indian and western looks for their collection. Embroidery on Indian garments was subtle while the westerns bore somewhat bold-ish detailing and looks were voluminous. The stage setting also corroborated well with the collection’s theme. A map of the world took over the ramp, on which the models sashayed down. With the designs focussing on “resurrection of women with the world under their feet,” the backdrop included a pile of chairs — the chair on top being the throne that women would come to claim.
Designer: Manish Malhotra
Known for: Opulent, contemporary Indian wear
It was a tastefully done Indian wedding wear collection for both men and women. There was a strategic use of velvet — sometimes on the sleeves and sometimes at the hem. The ensembles were put together beautifully with fine needlework. Although the entire collection, done primarily in different shades of pink, was received well, buyers were heard enquiring about the swarovski-studded sari post show. This particular piece, (far right), Manish told us, is an oyster sari embellished with swarovski crystals with a champagne petticoat. It is priced at Rs 4 lakh.
Gossip, glamour and sidelights
New star on the block
Karan Johar also came to watch Manish Malhotra’s show along with Alia Bhatt, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter. Alia is debuting with Karan’s next, Student of the Year. “I thought it would be great to let Aliya have a brush with glamour through couture week,” Karan said post show. Others seen cheering for the designer were Shweta Bachchan Nanda, Suzanne Roshan, Satish Kaushik, actor Manjot Singh of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! fame and Madhur Bhandarkar.
Suzanne’s Delhi store
Looking ultra-glam in black, Suzanne Roshan was present at the Couture Week to unveil the cover of a magazine, and decided to stay on for Manish Malhotra’s show. Roshan revealed that she is ready to expand her interior-designing business. “I plan to open another store in Delhi, hopefully in the next six months.” When asked her about her health regimen, she joked, “Everyone knows my husband is a fitness freak, so I by default keep in shape.”
‘This Dress is too heavy’
Actor Katrina Kaif, who did a sensuous walk for Manish Malhotra’s show in a beautiful gold lehenga, said that she may not opt for a similar lehenga for her own wedding. “I am not sure… with time your preference changes. You do a lot of consideration before choosing a lehenga. I don’t think I would go around wearing something like this because it is very heavy…. some 10 kilos I think,” she said, referring to her showstopper dress.
