Even a tiny piece of frill can spruce up your entire look. And that’s what peplums are all about. The sticky-out frills attached to the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress, glam up your outfit in an instant. And peplums have undoubtedly become the trend of the moment.

Right from singer Katy Perry rocking her white Vera Wang peplum dress at the Paris Fashion Week this year, to actors Michelle Williams and Tina Fey looking resplendent in peplum gowns at the Oscars this years, to our very own fashionista Sonam Kapoor, peplum is definitely the way to go this season. This classic style has also been spotted on Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine aka Kate Middleton, who is definitely living up to the reputation that the late Princess Diana had attained in terms of fashion (Diana also wore peplums back in the ’80s).

According to fashion designer Gaurav Gupta, peplums are here to stay. “Since this is the year of classics coming back, I’m not surprised that peplums are a rage. It gives an element of fun and adds drama to any dress. Ideally a young and petite girl would look awesome in it,” says Gupta. Designer Rina Dhaka says that one needs to wear peplums in a fun way, or else they could turn a tad drab. “One needs to see variations in it. The use of a drop waist has definitely modified peplums to suit contemporary tastes.” Designer Poonam Bhagat says peplum could be tricky for those on the heavier side. “Plump women should avoid peplums, as they tend to shift the focus towards the hips,” she says.

Wearing peplums
Avoid teaming up peplums with frills, ruffles and layers. Team up a peplum top with skinny jeans, cigarette pants, leggings or high-waist shorts to keep the look proportionate. Always opt for a slim-fitted, pencil skirt or dress as it accentuates the figure. Go for solid colours as they make you look slim. '
