Ok, here it is, the one liberating article that every woman who has sighed or gasped on stepping on the scales, need to keep and pin at the top of her mirror. The five golden rules of dressing right! Forget wearing dark colours to look slim, avoiding prints, and all that jazz. Don’t try to be invisible with mousy shapes and colours either. Whatever your size and weight, you can dress to look stylish! Here's how!
1 Know your shape: Are you an hourglass, though a large one, with a small waist, a pear or an apple? A good look at yourself in the mirror may tell you that things are not as bad as you think. A good wardrobe is what you need.
2 Sort out your wardrobe: Set aside every garment that is baggy, not well-stitched, or well-shaped. Most off-the-rack stuff, or one-size--fits-all purchases will have to go. It won’t cost much to replace these, if you invest wisely.
3 Get the must-haves: That includes a well fitted pair of jeans, and going for brands that make room for generous curves and plus sizes. A pair of tailored black formal pants or a pencil skirt is a good option. For tops, try V necks, boat necks that will show off your broad shoulders. Avoid big prints. Go for pretty florals and soft geometrics.
4 Fit them right: Pants and jeans must fit right at the waist. No cheating yourself into buying a smaller size. Avoid puckering at thighs or at crotch, it looks ugly and makes you look bigger than you are! Ditto for tops and blouses. Don’t let them cut at sleeve, pinch at shoulder, or show off the lines of fat at the back. Sit down and check how clothes work. If they cut you anywhere, get a larger size or a different style.
Distract from your body: Wear pretty shoes, a lovely pair of earrings, or flash your eyes from behind gorgeously outrageous shades. And of course you are lucky enough to carry those oversize handbags that are so in and look impossible on smaller women! Five easy rules. Add to it one more. Feel confident , feel stylish, feel good about who you are and not how you are shaped. And watch the heads turn!
