Every nook and cranny of the venue of the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week is jam packed with the fashion frat of Delhi and beyond, all trying to look like the next Kate Moss on the cover of Vogue. Not a strand of hair out of place, manoeuvering the two floor terrain in their high heels, braving the Delhi heat for a smoke with the ‘in’ crowd out in the beating sun, it never ceases to amaze me how these ladies and some gentlemen manage to do this day in and out for an entire week?

What about the ones who do not endorse Zara from head to toe and want to attend the Fashion Week in their khadi kurtas or a simple plain tee? Going by personal experience, I was once asked what I was doing at a Fashion Week wearing a kurta and chappals. It dumbfounded me to an extent that the next day I tried to look like Kate Moss and failed rather miserably.

FashionThat is when it struck me, is a Fashion Week meant for the fashion conscious, glamour-struck junta or do people like me have a place in this heavily brand conscious environment? I mean, I understand fashion and completely understand the commercial aspect of a fashion week, then why should I be scorned?

Battling with this predicament, I asked one of the fashionably dressed ladies here at the Fashion Week, why she and many like her ridicule a plain Jane. In all her honesty, she gave a very simple almost grandmotherly explanation. She said, "Jaisa Des Vaisa Bhesh" and I had no further questions.

Maybe, it’s fashionable for some of us to be contemptuous towards them but after all, this is their territory. Maybe, the divas need to be a little more accommodating and the kurta clad Jane could ditch her khadi for 5 days. Just a thought!
