A report has hailed 2011 as one of the most successful for prestige beauty, with brands including Lancome, Chanel and Estee Lauder proving popular with consumers.
Studying the period of January-October 2011, American market research company The NPD Group noted a combination of new products and classics have been driving sales in the United States.
"With 18 months of consecutive monthly increases, prestige beauty is experiencing unprecedented growth," Karen Grant of The NPD Group is quoted as saying in WWD, adding that 2011 looks to be one of the most successful years in prestige beauty.
In terms of statistics, make-up sales are up 9%, while skincare sales have increased by 13% and fragrance consumption has noted a 10% increase.
Clinique and Lancome have proven popular with consumers, appearing in lists of the top three cosmetic brands (along with MAC) as well as the bestselling skincare labels (along with Estee Lauder). In terms of female fragrance, two Chanel scents are in the top three Coco Mademoiselle and Chanel No. 5 along with Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue.
For gentlemen, Chanel makes another appearance in the top three with Bleu de Chanel, while Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio and Gucci Guilty Homme have also been top sellers.
In terms of top product launches, Lancome, Chanel and Estee Lauder have continued to impress shoppers. Lancome Color Design Five Shadow and Liner Palette and Chanel Rouge Coco Shine have been cited as top cosmetic launches to date, while Estee Lauder Even Skintone Illuminator & Lancome Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector complete the top skincare launches.
For fragrance, Justin Bieber Someday and Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh are top selling newcomers for women, while Gucci Guilty Homme has been the biggest new success for men.
