Highlight Story

Bollywood’s award season is here, and stars are walking the red carpet in style. But this is also the time when the fashion police is alert and all set to applaud the savvy dressers and pan the style offenders. As the first set of awards just got over, we discovered that the worst-dressed divas need not look far for lessons in style. A look at their counterparts would definitely teach them a thing or two about getting the look right. We get the experts to tell us who should be taking style lessons from whom.

Vidya Balan and Katrina Kaif
Vidya Balan stuck to her favourite outfit — the sari — but failed to dress her age by going for a bulky silk drape that added years to her look. Katrina, on the other hand, dazzle everyone in her light weight sari.

Expert speak: Designer Anupama Dayal says, “Vidya's style of the traditional sari paired with an elbow length blouse is passé. She should avoid Kanchivarams or silks that make her look heavy. Like Katrina, she should opt for saris that drape easily without adding bulk. Satin or crepe saris without heavy embroidery on the border will look great on her.

Dia Mirza and Jacqueline Fernandez
A long goddess gown is the most appropriate dress for the red carpet. But Dia and Jacqueline, who wore gowns, showed contrasting ways to carry the look. Dia looked ravishing in an aubergine fitted gown, while Jacqueline with her overdose of velvet, killed the look totally.

Expert speak: Designer Nil from the duo Dev R Nil says, “It seems Jacqueline just walked out of the house without checking herself in the mirorr. The ill-fitted velvet gown is not enhancing her assets. Dia has got it right without being flashy. Her look is mesmerising.”

Malaika Arora Khan and Rani Mukerji
While both Rani and Malaika chose to wear the Little Black Dress (LBD) dress to the award function, the former defintely scored brownie points with her structured and smart dress. Rani on the other hand, failed to impress with her bubbly teenager frock. She could just look at Malaika and get inspired.

Expert speak: Designer Raakesh Agarvwal says, “Rani has gone back to the school time style with her semi-frill dress. This is not a red carpet look at all. She definitely doesn't know how to accentuate her body by choosing the right outfit. She should look at Malaika, who looks stunning in the Herve Leger dress. Rani should have opted for a fitted dress, paired with metallic high heels for some bling and sheen in her overall look, the way Malaika has done it.”
