She may have started off as a fresh-faced designer at Lakme Fashion Week, but Surily Goel soon made the inevitable move to Bollywood. Styling high-profile celebrity clients such as Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta for movies and ad campaigns kept her so busy that she seemed to have almost dropped off the runway.
Now, having returned with a collection aptly titled Revival, Surily is back to claim her original space as a designer. “I was concentrating on my styling, especially since I was dressing Hrithik for his TV shows and working with Preity on her upcoming movie Ishkq In Paris,” she says, adding, “But I get bored easily, so it’s nice to go back and forth between designing and styling to keep myself challenged.”
Her debut platform, LFW, just wrapped up, and Surily admits she missed out on participating this season. “I was travelling so much, by the time it wrapped up, it was too late to have a show. But I’d prefer the focus to be on me, rather than being lost in the middle of such a big event,” she insists, pointing out that she will have a private showing of her new capsule collection on August 22, following which it will be available at Ensemble, Kemps Corner.
Ask whether her list of celebrity clients, which includes Malaika Arora Khan and Sussanne Roshan, have influenced the designs in her newest offering, and she responds, “This new collection has nothing to do with my star friends. Styling for Bollywood has helped me reach out to the masses, but right now, I’m like a girl in a candy store, and I want to experiment with everything.”
Is there one celebrity who she’d like to see donning her designs soon? “Sonam Kapoor is probably the best-dressed celeb today. But she’s a couture icon, and only wears the most high-end clothes. So, I’d like to dress her in something that’s a little more street stylish.”
