It was her debut stint as an award presenter at an international awards do, and actor Deepika Padukone was under the critics scanner for her style, getting a mixed reaction for her look at the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards, held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Sunday.
Along with Hollywood actor Nina Dobrev, Dippy presented the Best Video award to The Weeknd. The 30-year-old wore Monisha Jaising separates — a military green skirt with a thigh-high slit, topped with a matching bustier and a bomber jacket (that she wore like a cape), studded with metallic 3-D embellishments. A Balmain belt and fringe earrings by label Valliyan completed Dippy’s look that was called a ‘Bollywood blunder’ by UK tabloid Daily Mail.
Designer Nikhil Mehra also thought the look could have been more fun, keeping the event in mind. “It’s an award function which is not all-out glam. So, Deepika could have experimented more and had a bit more fun with it. Though I don’t mind the skirt too much, I’m on the fence about the embellished bodice,” he says.
However, Dippy’s sartorial choice impressed some. Calling Deepika “the epitome of style,” fashion designer Ritu Beri says: “I absolutely loved her ensemble, especially the creativity with which she put it together. Deepika has inherent grace and elegance which she carries with every look she adorns.”
"Military green is a functional and strong colour. It has a tough, almost androgynous appeal for all of those women warriors out there! Deepika is unstoppable, fit and fierce; making a perfect muse for my Artemisia Gown. I'm thrilled to collaboratively envision with Shaleena Nathani, and create this very special piece for Deepika Padukone for the EMAs" - Monisha Jaising. #deepikapadukone #monishajaising #monishajaisingxxxshaleenanathanicollab #stylefile #mtvemas #militarygreen #redcarpet #xxxthereturnofxandercage
For designer Suneet Varma, being on the green team worked for the Bollywood star. “I think she looks great and I particularly like her choice of colour. It’s a fantastic shade, like the one inspired by chartreuse liqueur. Also, the large sequin texture on the jacket and bustier, although all-out blingy, is also very modern. And, the draped skirt does complete justice to those toned legs! Very chic n’ sexy,” he says.
